Arm Positioner During Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery
My first product development co-op took place on a small team where I built prototypes for a surgical positioning device. It was one of my first tastes of designing a product to be manufactured.
When patients undergo arthroscopic shoulder surgery, they are often put in the lateral decubitus position (shown on the right)
In order for the surgeon to have access to every part of the acromioclavicular the surgeon must be able to apply a lifting force under the bicep and articulate the vector at which it is applied.
This device attaches to a disposable arm strap. The arm strap can be tightened or loosened and moved forward and backwards to change how the force is applied.
The spring scale allows the surgeon to know how much force they are applying to the patient. The sliding linkage automatically locks when the device is unfolded, and easily folds up to be easily transportable between surgical rooms.
I was able to take this from concept through several prototype iterations.
